Best Local Banh Mi in Ho Chi Minh City

These days, bánh mì is just as famous as phở. It has become one of Vietnam’s best-known dishes around the world. Over the past decade, TV hosts, travel bloggers, YouTubers, and social media creators have introduced millions of people to this iconic Vietnamese sandwich.

For example, Anthony Bourdain helped make Bánh Mì Phượng famous after visiting the shop during an episode of No Reservations. Since the episode aired in 2009, visitors have lined up outside the store every day. Likewise, many other bánh mì shops have become popular because of Instagram posts and online travel guides.

However, locals see things differently. Most people living in Vietnam believe there is no single best bánh mì. Instead, everyone has a personal favourite. The choice often depends on taste, childhood memories, convenience, or habit. Therefore, calling one shop the “best” can be misleading. In many cases, these rankings exist mainly to attract clicks rather than help travellers discover great food.

Instead of following the crowds, consider exploring local neighbourhoods. Below, I’ve listed four excellent bánh mì shops in Ho Chi Minh City, where I currently live. Each shop serves delicious bánh mì at reasonable prices.

Although these stalls are popular with local residents, they rarely have long queues. You also won’t find people taking selfies or multilingual menus. Instead, you’ll experience authentic Vietnamese street food.

In fact, bánh mì is everywhere in Ho Chi Minh City. Hundreds of excellent vendors can be found across the city. Therefore, don’t limit yourself to the famous names. Try a neighbourhood favourite instead.

4 Local Stalls for Authentic Vietnamese Bánh Mì in Saigon

Most locals in Ho Chi Minh City ignore online lists claiming to feature the “best bánh mì.” They simply visit their favourite neighbourhood shop. That shop may be close to home, near work, or along the route to school.

This guide was created with help from several members of the Vietnam Coracle team. Together, we have spent many years living and eating in Ho Chi Minh City. As a result, every recommendation comes from first-hand experience.

Moreover, each stall is located in a local neighbourhood. Visiting these areas gives travellers a better understanding of everyday life in Saigon. You can enjoy excellent bánh mì while exploring parts of the city that many tourists never see.

We hope more visitors choose these local shops instead of only visiting the famous ones. After that, you’ll likely discover many more outstanding bánh mì stalls in Ho Chi Minh City and throughout Vietnam.

Bánh Mì Hiền, Ho Chi Minh City, Saigon, Vietnam

Colourful, textural, tasty: bánh mì in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

No Name (Bánh Mì 232)

Address: Hẻm 232 Bà Hạt, District 10
Open: 4:00 PM–11:00 PM (Daily)
Price: 20,000–30,000 VND

For more than 45 years, this local bánh mì cart has appeared every afternoon at the entrance of Alley 232 on Bà Hạt Street. It is a true neighbourhood institution and one of the most authentic bánh mì stalls in Ho Chi Minh City.

Despite its simple appearance, the cart functions as a bakery, kitchen, and sandwich shop all in one. Moreover, the surrounding neighbourhood captures the everyday atmosphere of old Saigon. Traditional homes, small businesses, ageing apartment blocks, and busy street food vendors create a lively local scene.

I once lived just 50 metres away from this stall with a group of friends. Because of that, I returned here countless times for an afternoon or late-night bánh mì.

The bread is large, crispy, and wonderfully soft inside. Fresh loaves are stored in a wicker basket under a towel to keep them warm. Meanwhile, several baguettes are grilled continuously, ensuring every customer receives freshly toasted bread.

The choice of fillings is impressive. You can choose from roast pork, Vietnamese cold cuts, quail eggs, grilled pork patties, pork floss (chà bông), meatballs (xíu mại), fried eggs, pâté, mayonnaise, pickles, herbs, cucumber, or even phá lấu.

If you only visit once, order the bánh mì đầy đủ with every topping. It is filling, packed with flavour, and offers one of the most authentic local bánh mì experiences in Ho Chi Minh City.

Bánh Mì Hiền

Address: 71 Nguyễn Đình Chiểu, Phú Nhuận District
Open: 2:00 PM–10:00 PM (Daily)
Price: 20,000–25,000 VND

For nearly two decades, Bánh Mì Hiền has served loyal customers from a busy street near a traditional fresh market in Phú Nhuận District. Today, it remains one of the area’s favourite local bánh mì shops.

Unlike many street vendors, the shop prepares many of its own fillings and sauces. As a result, every sandwich tastes noticeably fresher. The bread also arrives warm from a nearby bakery, giving it a crispy crust and a light, fluffy centre.

Each bánh mì is generously filled with Vietnamese cold cuts, pâté, mayonnaise, pork floss, pickles, coriander, chillies, and seasoning.

However, the homemade xíu mại is the real highlight. The tender pork meatballs add richness and moisture without overpowering the other ingredients. Overall, the flavours are balanced, satisfying, and excellent value for money.

Bánh Mì Sáu Minh

Address: 170 Võ Văn Tần, District 3
Open: 24 Hours
Price: 40,000–50,000 VND

Located on a busy corner in District 3, Bánh Mì Sáu Minh is one of the best-known local bánh mì stalls in Ho Chi Minh City. It has served customers for almost 50 years.

The baguettes are wonderfully crisp on the outside while remaining soft and airy inside. In addition, every sandwich is generously filled with premium ingredients.

Rich pâté and creamy mayonnaise create a deep savoury flavour. Meanwhile, a wide variety of Vietnamese cold cuts makes this a true meat lover’s bánh mì. Pork floss adds sweetness, while cucumber, herbs, and pickles provide freshness and crunch.

Another advantage is that the stall operates 24 hours a day. Therefore, it is an excellent choice for breakfast, a late-night snack, or supper after an evening out.

Many years ago, my friends and I often stopped here after long nights at YOKO Saigon. Although the price is slightly higher than average, the generous portions and outstanding quality easily justify the extra cost.

Lò Bánh Mì Lương Phan

Address: 154 Lâm Văn Bền, District 7
Open: 4:30 AM–6:30 PM (Mon–Sat); 4:30 AM–1:00 PM (Sun)
Price: 20,000–35,000 VND

For almost 20 years, Lò Bánh Mì Lương Phan has baked fresh baguettes and served them straight from the oven. If you are searching for freshly baked bánh mì in Ho Chi Minh City, this is an excellent choice.

Located in a quiet neighbourhood in District 7, the bakery offers a welcome escape from the city’s busy traffic. Even before you arrive, the smell of freshly baked bread fills the surrounding streets.

The sandwiches are generously packed with thick slices of Vietnamese cold cuts, rich pâté, creamy mayonnaise, pork floss, and pickles.

Most importantly, the bread is exceptional. It is crunchy outside, soft inside, and slightly denser than most Vietnamese baguettes. Consequently, every sandwich feels substantial and satisfying.

There is also a coffee shop next door, making this an ideal stop for breakfast or an easy morning walk around the neighbourhood.

After one bite, it is easy to understand why Anthony Bourdain once wondered how Vietnamese bakers make their bread “so perfect every time.”
