30 of the Best Roads for Motorbiking in Vietnam

Vietnam offers some of the best motorbike roads in Southeast Asia. After riding more than 250,000 km across the country over the past 15 years, I still discover new roads that surprise and inspire me.

Every journey has introduced breathtaking scenery, welcoming local communities, delicious regional food, and unforgettable riding experiences.

Based on those adventures, I have selected 30 of the best roads in Vietnam for motorbiking. Each route combines beautiful landscapes with enjoyable riding conditions, making them ideal for both experienced riders and adventurous travelers.

How These Roads Were Selected

Every road on this list meets several important criteria:

• Smooth, fully paved surfaces
• Good road conditions
• Beautiful mountain or coastal scenery
• Plenty of curves, climbs, and descents
• Light traffic
• Comfortable road width for motorbikes

As a result, each route offers an enjoyable and relatively safe riding experience.

Of course, no rider can honestly claim to have explored every road in Vietnam. I certainly cannot. However, after thousands of hours on the road, these routes remain some of the most memorable I have ever ridden.

The following list is presented in no particular order.

1. Tây Nghệ An Road

Route: Mường Xén → Yên Nhân

Distance: 235 km

Province: Nghệ An

Scenery: Limestone mountains, deep valleys, rivers, jungles, ethnic villages

Road Conditions: Good two-lane asphalt road with very little traffic

Best Time to Visit: March–August

The Tây Nghệ An Road winds through one of Vietnam’s least-visited mountain regions.

Along the way, the road climbs high mountain slopes, follows rushing rivers, and passes beneath dramatic limestone peaks. In addition, small ethnic minority villages add plenty of cultural interest to the journey.

Road conditions remain excellent throughout most of the route. Even better, traffic is extremely light, allowing riders to enjoy the scenery at a relaxed pace.

Overall, this region feels similar to Hà Giang before tourism became popular.

2. National Highway QL279

Route: Mường Kim → Minh Thắng

Distance: 105 km

Province: Sơn La – Điện Biên

Scenery: Lakes, limestone mountains, jungle, rivers, mountain passes

Road Conditions: Good two-lane asphalt road with almost no traffic

Best Time to Visit: March–November

The ride begins beside the spectacular Hồ Bản Chắt Reservoir, where bright blue water reflects the surrounding limestone mountains.

Next, the road follows a series of sweeping mountain passes before reaching the beautiful Sông Đà (Black River).

Despite its name, the river often appears bright blue beneath towering limestone cliffs.

Finally, a long bridge crosses the valley before another spectacular climb delivers panoramic views over the surrounding mountains.

3. National Highway QL3

Route: Cao Bằng → Nà Phặc

Distance: 80 km

Province: Cao Bằng – Bắc Kạn

Scenery: Forest-covered mountains

This stretch of National Highway QL3 ranks among the most enjoyable mountain rides in northeast Vietnam.

After leaving Cao Bằng, straight sections almost disappear. Instead, riders encounter continuous bends through dense forests and rolling mountain ranges.

Because the region remains sparsely populated, traffic stays light for most of the journey.

For centuries, these remote mountains provided shelter for rebels, revolutionaries, and local bandits. Today, they offer one of Vietnam’s finest riding experiences.

4. National Highway QL4H

Route: Chà Cang → Mường Nhé

Distance: 80 km

Province: Điện Biên

Scenery: High mountains, open valleys, ethnic villages

Road Conditions: Excellent asphalt road with very little traffic

Best Time to Visit: May–October

National Highway QL4H crosses one of the most remote regions in northwest Vietnam.

The smooth road follows wide valleys before climbing over quiet mountain passes near the Laos border.

Because few vehicles travel this route, riding feels peaceful from start to finish.

However, this area is considered politically sensitive. Police checkpoints occasionally restrict travel beyond Mường Nhé, especially for foreign visitors. Therefore, always check local regulations before beginning your journey.

5. Provincial Road DT520 / QL16

Route: Quan Hóa → Mường Lát

Distance: 95 km

Province: Thanh Hóa

Scenery: Forests, river valleys, ethnic minority villages

Road Conditions: Good asphalt road with light traffic

Best Time to Visit: April–October

Provincial Road DT520 passes through one of Thanh Hóa Province’s most remote landscapes.

Dense forests, steep valleys, and traditional villages create a memorable ride from beginning to end.

Originally, the road supported trade between Vietnam and Laos. Today, however, traffic remains surprisingly light, making it an excellent choice for motorbike touring.

Before planning your trip, note that foreign visitors are currently not permitted to stay overnight in Mường Lát.

7. Western Ho Chi Minh Road (QL15)

Route: Khe Sanh → Khe Gát

Distance: 240 km

Province: Quảng Trị – Quảng Bình

Scenery: Jungle, limestone mountains, rivers, caves, remote villages

Road Conditions: Good concrete road with almost no traffic

Best Time to Visit: April–September

The Western Ho Chi Minh Road is often considered one of the best motorcycle roads in Vietnam.

Although much of the route consists of a single concrete lane, traffic is almost non-existent. Therefore, riders can fully enjoy its endless curves, mountain passes, and rolling plateaus.

Meanwhile, spectacular scenery accompanies the entire journey. Dense forests, clear rivers, limestone mountains, and traditional villages create one unforgettable ride after another.

Overall, this route easily lives up to its outstanding reputation.

8. Trường Sơn Đông Road

Route: Đắk Pơ → Xã Hiếu

Distance: 105 km

Province: Gia Lai – Quảng Ngãi

Scenery: Highlands, forests, farmland, mountains, ethnic villages

Road Conditions: Good two-lane asphalt road with very light traffic

Best Time to Visit: April–September

The Trường Sơn Đông Road offers one of the finest rides through Vietnam’s Central Highlands.

Large sections have recently been upgraded, providing smooth asphalt and comfortable riding conditions. At the same time, traffic remains extremely light.

The road passes fertile farmland, dense forests, and small ethnic minority communities such as Ayun Pa, K’Bang, and Ea Ly.

Although the full route is still incomplete, the section between Đắk Pơ and Xã Hiếu is exceptionally scenic.

9. National Highway QL7A

Route: Anh Sơn → Nậm Cắn

Distance: 150 km

Province: Nghệ An

Scenery: River valleys, limestone mountains, forests

Road Conditions: Good asphalt road with light traffic

Best Time to Visit: April–September

National Highway QL7A follows the Lam River deep into western Nghệ An Province.

The route gradually leaves agricultural valleys behind before entering increasingly rugged mountain landscapes near the Laos border.

In addition, the road passes the edge of Pù Mát National Park, one of Vietnam’s largest protected forests.

Traffic stays relatively light throughout the journey. Therefore, riders can enjoy the scenery without feeling rushed.

10. Núi Chúa Coast Road (DT702)

Route: Ninh Chữ → Mỹ Thanh

Distance: 60 km

Province: Ninh Thuận – Khánh Hòa

Scenery: Coastline, beaches, rocky cliffs, dry hills

Road Conditions: Good asphalt road with light traffic

Best Time to Visit: January–October

The Núi Chúa Coast Road ranks among Vietnam’s most spectacular coastal rides.

The smooth road follows dramatic cliffs overlooking turquoise water and some of the country’s finest beaches.

Despite becoming increasingly popular, traffic remains surprisingly light. Consequently, riders can enjoy sweeping bends and beautiful ocean views in relative comfort.

11. National Highway QL32

Route: Ba Khe → Bình Lư

Distance: 230 km

Province: Yên Bái – Lai Châu

Scenery: Mountains, rivers, valleys, rice terraces

Road Conditions: Good asphalt road with mostly light traffic

Best Time to Visit: April–October

National Highway QL32 crosses the magnificent Hoàng Liên Sơn mountain range.

Recent upgrades have transformed the road into one of Vietnam’s smoothest mountain routes.

Along the way, riders pass deep valleys, winding rivers, and famous rice terraces around Mù Cang Chải.

Finally, the legendary Khau Phạ Pass delivers one of the highlights of the entire journey.

12. Provincial Road DT725

Route: Ma Đa Gui → Hoài Đức

Distance: 140 km

Province: Lâm Đồng

Scenery: Forests, coffee plantations, tea farms, mountains

Road Conditions: Good asphalt road with light traffic

Best Time to Visit: December–April

Provincial Road DT725 cuts across the heart of the Central Highlands.

The route begins near Cát Tiên National Park, where dense tropical forest dominates the landscape.

As the elevation increases, forests gradually give way to endless coffee plantations and tea farms.

Much of the road has recently been resurfaced. As a result, riding conditions are excellent for most of the journey.

13. Ninh Thuận Coastal Road

Route: Cà Ná → Ninh Chữ

Distance: 40 km

Province: Ninh Thuận

Scenery: Rocky coastline, cliffs, sand dunes, beaches

Road Conditions: Good asphalt road with occasional potholes

Best Time to Visit: January–October

The Ninh Thuận Coastal Road follows one of Vietnam’s most dramatic shorelines.

Engineers carved much of the route directly into steep coastal cliffs only a few years ago.

Today, riders enjoy breathtaking sea views, quiet beaches, and impressive rock formations throughout the journey.

Occasional falling rocks damage sections of the road after heavy rain. Nevertheless, most of the surface remains smooth and enjoyable to ride.

14. National Highway QL4D

Route: Sa Pa → Phong Thổ

Distance: 100 km

Province: Lào Cai – Lai Châu

Scenery: Mountains, valleys, rice terraces, rivers

Road Conditions: Good asphalt road with light traffic

Best Time to Visit: March–October

National Highway QL4D crosses Vietnam’s highest mountain range beneath Mount Fansipan.

Extensive road improvements have transformed this route into one of northern Vietnam’s finest mountain drives.

The road climbs to Ô Quy Hồ Pass, the highest mountain pass in Vietnam, before descending through spectacular valleys filled with rice terraces and ethnic villages.

Road conditions remain excellent throughout most of the year. However, landslides occasionally occur during the rainy season, so riders should monitor weather conditions before travelling.

15. National Highway QL27 / QL20

Route: Tân Sơn → Đà Lạt

Distance: 70 km

Province: Ninh Thuận – Lâm Đồng

Scenery: Mountains, pine forests, tea plantations, highland farms

Road Conditions: Good asphalt road with light traffic

Best Time to Visit: December–April

National Highways QL27 and QL20 connect the hot lowlands of Ninh Thuận with the cool mountain city of Đà Lạt.

Historically, this served as the main route between the coast and the former French hill station.

After extensive upgrades, the road now offers smooth pavement and excellent riding conditions.

Within only 70 km, riders climb from near sea level to around 1,500 metres. Along the way, winding mountain passes, pine forests, tea plantations, and fertile highland farms create an unforgettable riding experience.

Moreover, traffic is much lighter than in previous years, making this route even more enjoyable for motorbike travelers.

16. Asian Highway AH13 (QL6 & QL279)

Route: Sơn La → Điện Biên Phủ
Distance: 155km
Province: Sơn La & Điện Biên
Scenery: High mountains, jungles, rivers, rice fields, limestone karsts, rural villages
Road conditions: Good two-lane asphalt road, fairly light traffic
Best time to ride: April–October

Often described as Vietnam’s gateway to the remote northwest, Asian Highway AH13 combines National Highways QL6 and QL279 into one of the country’s finest motorbike routes. The road winds through mountain passes, river valleys, and quiet rural communities before reaching Điện Biên Phủ.

Road conditions have improved significantly in recent years. As a result, riders can enjoy long stretches of smooth asphalt with relatively little traffic. The highlight is the spectacular Pha Đin Pass, followed by the descent into the historic Mường Thanh Valley.

In addition to its scenery, this route is rich in history. The valley was the site of the famous 1954 Battle of Điện Biên Phủ, where Vietnamese forces defeated the French after transporting supplies through these rugged mountains. Today, the same landscape offers one of the most rewarding motorcycle rides in Vietnam.

17. Provincial Road DT722

Route: Suối Vàng Lake → Đưng K’Nớ
Distance: 50km
Province: Lâm Đồng
Scenery: Pine forests, jungle, mountains, coffee farms, ethnic villages
Road conditions: Excellent two-lane asphalt road, very light traffic
Best time to ride: December–April

Provincial Road DT722 is one of the quietest motorbike roads in the Central Highlands. The route crosses rolling hills, dense pine forests, and cool mountain landscapes just north of Đà Lạt.

The road surface is excellent throughout its 50km length. Moreover, traffic is almost non-existent, making the ride peaceful and enjoyable.

However, the route currently ends at the Krông Nô River because construction has not yet been completed. Eventually, DT722 will connect with Trường Sơn Đông Road via Yang Mao.

Even so, the road is well worth riding. Smooth pavement, fresh mountain air, and beautiful forest scenery make this one of Lâm Đồng’s hidden gems.

18. Provincial Road DT206 (QL3 to Bản Giốc)

Route: Cao Bằng → Bản Giốc Waterfall
Distance: 80km
Province: Cao Bằng
Scenery: Limestone mountains, forests, rice fields, valleys, waterfalls
Road conditions: Good two-lane asphalt road, light traffic, some trucks
Best time to ride: April–October

Provincial Road DT206 continues from National Highway QL3 and leads riders through one of northeast Vietnam’s most beautiful landscapes. The route follows peaceful valleys near the Chinese border before reaching the spectacular Bản Giốc Waterfall.

After several years of upgrades, the road is now smooth and easy to ride. Riders can enjoy sweeping corners and famous sections such as Mã Phục Pass while taking in the dramatic limestone scenery.

However, trade with China has increased the number of container trucks using this route. Even so, overall traffic remains light, and the outstanding scenery easily outweighs this minor drawback.

19. Ho Chi Minh Road (QL15)

Route: Khe Gát → Tân Ấp
Distance: 90km
Province: Quảng Bình & Hà Tĩnh
Scenery: Jungle, limestone mountains, rivers, rural villages
Road conditions: Good two-lane asphalt road, light traffic
Best time to ride: April–September

This section of the Ho Chi Minh Road is one of the most enjoyable motorcycle routes in Central Vietnam. The road winds through towering limestone mountains, crosses clear blue rivers, and follows the Lao border.

The asphalt is wide, smooth, and well maintained. Therefore, riding conditions are excellent for most of the year.

The route also has historical significance. During the Vietnam War, the famous Ho Chi Minh Trail passed through nearby forests to transport soldiers and supplies. Today, riders can experience the same dramatic landscape in comfort.

Traffic is generally light. However, more trucks now use this road instead of Highway 1. Pay extra attention when climbing the steep Đá Đẽo Pass.

20. Hải Vân Pass

Route: Cu Đê River → Lăng Cô
Distance: 25km
Province: Đà Nẵng & Thừa Thiên Huế
Scenery: Coastline, beaches, mountains, bays, ocean views

Best time to ride: April–September

The Hải Vân Pass is one of Vietnam’s most famous mountain roads and one of the country’s top motorbike routes. The pass links Đà Nẵng and Huế while following the coastline of Central Vietnam.

Internationally, the road became famous after appearing in the BBC’s Top Gear Vietnam Special in 2008. Since then, it has become a must-ride destination for motorcycle travellers.

Although the pass is only 25km long, it offers spectacular views of the sea and surrounding mountains. Furthermore, most heavy vehicles now use the Hải Vân Tunnel, so traffic on the pass is relatively light.

As a result, riders can fully enjoy the wide curves, smooth pavement, and iconic hairpin bends.

21. National Highway QL27C

Route: Diên Khánh → Đà Lạt
Distance: 120km
Province: Khánh Hòa & Lâm Đồng
Scenery: Mountains, rivers, valleys, pine forests, coffee plantations
Road conditions: Good two-lane asphalt road, fairly light traffic
Best time to ride: January–September

National Highway QL27C connects the beaches of Nha Trang with the cool climate of Đà Lạt. The road climbs from sea level to around 1,700m, creating one of Vietnam’s most scenic elevation changes.

Although parts of the route existed during the French colonial period, the highway has only recently been upgraded. Today, it serves as the preferred route between the coast and the Central Highlands.

One highlight is the 37km Khánh Lê Pass, where the road climbs from peaceful farmland into misty mountain forests. Afterward, the route crosses cool pine-covered plateaus and coffee-growing regions.

Traffic is moderate. However, weekday rides are usually quiet enough to enjoy the scenery without interruption.

22. Mã Pí Lèng Pass (QL4C)

Route: Đồng Văn → Mèo Vạc
Distance: 20km
Province: Hà Giang
Scenery: Limestone mountains, deep valleys, gorges, Nho Quế River
Road conditions: Good single-lane asphalt road, light traffic
Best time to ride: March–October

Many riders consider Mã Pí Lèng Pass the most spectacular mountain road in Vietnam. Located in Hà Giang Province near the Chinese border, this iconic route follows dramatic cliffs high above the emerald Nho Quế River.

Towering limestone peaks surround the narrow road, creating unforgettable views around every corner. As the road twists along the mountainside, riders experience one of the country’s greatest driving roads.

However, the pass is narrow and includes several exposed sections. Therefore, ride carefully, especially during weekends when visitor numbers increase.

Even so, the scenery is extraordinary. Every list of the best motorbike roads in Vietnam deserves to include Mã Pí Lèng Pass.

23. Provincial Road DT716 & DT716B

Route: Phú Hải → Phan Rí Cửa
Distance: 60km
Province: Bình Thuận
Scenery: Beaches, sand dunes, coastline, desert landscapes
Road conditions: Excellent two-lane asphalt road, light traffic
Best time to ride: January–October

Starting near Mũi Né, DT716 and DT716B form one of Vietnam’s finest coastal motorcycle routes. The road begins on the wide Võ Nguyên Giáp bypass before following the shoreline past empty beaches and towering red sand dunes.

The asphalt is smooth, wide, and enjoyable to ride. In addition, traffic remains very light for most of the route.

However, foreign riders are frequently stopped at a well-known police checkpoint along DT716. Fortunately, many experienced riders avoid it by using a nearby back road.

Further east, DT716B crosses the spectacular White Sand Dunes on a smooth, gently rolling highway. Overall, this is one of the best coastal rides in southern Vietnam.

24. Provincial Road DT128

Route: Lai Châu → Sìn Hồ
Distance: 55km
Province: Lai Châu
Scenery: Limestone mountains, jungles, rice terraces, valleys
Road conditions: Good two-lane asphalt road, some rough sections
Best time to ride: March–October

Provincial Road DT128 climbs from Lai Châu City to the mountain town of Sìn Hồ through one of northwest Vietnam’s most impressive landscapes. The route winds around steep mountainsides and offers sweeping views across endless mountain ranges.

Most of the road has recently been widened and resurfaced. As a result, riding conditions are excellent and traffic remains extremely light.

The road features countless bends and switchbacks, making it a favourite among experienced riders. However, the final 15km is still under construction and can become difficult during wet weather.

Once completed, DT128 will become one of the best mountain roads for motorbiking in Vietnam.

25. Côn Sơn Island Coast Road

Route: National Park HQ → Đầm Trầu
Distance: 35km
Province: Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu
Scenery: Wild beaches, rocky cliffs, forests, dramatic coastline, colonial-era town
Road conditions: Good two-lane asphalt road, almost no traffic, strong coastal winds
Best time to ride: March–August

Located around 80km off the Mekong Delta, Côn Sơn Island is one of Vietnam’s most beautiful island destinations. The Côn Sơn Island Coast Road follows the island’s eastern and southern coastline, offering one of the finest coastal motorbike rides in Vietnam.

The route stretches from the scenic port of Bến Đầm to Đầm Trầu Beach and the island’s small airport. Although the road is only 35km long, it delivers spectacular ocean views almost the entire way. In addition, traffic is virtually non-existent, making the ride peaceful and relaxing.

However, don’t expect to finish the journey quickly. The beaches, cliffs, and turquoise sea provide countless photo opportunities, so you’ll probably stop several times along the way. Finally, be careful when riding around the exposed headlands, where strong winds can appear without warning.

26. Ho Chi Minh Road (QL14)

Route: Thạnh Mỹ → Đa Krông Bridge

Province: Quảng Nam, Thừa Thiên Huế & Quảng Trị
Scenery: Jungle, mountains, rivers, ethnic villages, agricultural valleys
Road conditions: Good two-lane asphalt road, some concrete sections, light traffic
Best time to ride: March–September

This section of the Ho Chi Minh Road is one of the longest and most rewarding motorcycle routes in Central Vietnam. The highway crosses remote mountains, lush jungles, peaceful river valleys, and traditional ethnic minority villages.

Along the route, riders also encounter important historical landmarks, including Hamburger Hill, A Shau Valley, and Khe Sanh. However, today’s biggest attraction is the region’s natural beauty rather than its wartime history.

From Thạnh Mỹ, the road climbs through a series of sweeping mountain passes before reaching Prao and A Lưới. Thick tropical forests blanket the surrounding mountains, providing habitat for rare wildlife such as the endangered Saola.

Even better, traffic is incredibly light. On some sections, it’s possible to ride more than 100km without seeing another vehicle. As the road follows broad river valleys, the pavement becomes wide and smooth, creating one of Vietnam’s most enjoyable long-distance rides.

27. National Highway QL91B

Route: Đại Ngãi Ferry → Mỏ Ó Beach
Distance: 40km
Province: Sóc Trăng
Scenery: Rice fields, fruit orchards, rivers, fishing villages, vegetable gardens
Road conditions: Good two-lane asphalt road, light traffic
Best time to ride: November–June

The Mekong Delta is famous for its flat landscape, so most roads are long and straight. Nevertheless, National Highway QL91B is one of the region’s most enjoyable motorbike routes.

Recently upgraded, the road follows the southern bank of the Hậu River before reaching the quiet coastline near Mỏ Ó Beach. Road conditions are good, and traffic remains relatively light because this area receives few international visitors.

In addition, the scenery is very different from Vietnam’s mountain roads. Riders pass fruit orchards, rice fields, vegetable farms, canals, and traditional fishing villages. Early morning and late afternoon offer the best light for photography.

Overall, QL91B is an easy and relaxing ride, making it one of the best roads for exploring the Mekong Delta by motorbike.

28. National Highway QL279

Route: Chợ Rã → Na Hang
Distance: 85km
Province: Bắc Kạn & Tuyên Quang
Scenery: Limestone mountains, lakes, rivers, jungles, valleys, villages
Road conditions: Good two-lane asphalt road, almost no traffic
Best time to ride: March–November

National Highway QL279 offers another outstanding motorbike road in northern Vietnam. Beginning near Ba Bể Lake, the route climbs through limestone mountains before continuing across forests, valleys, and peaceful rural communities.

The road surface is smooth and well maintained. Furthermore, traffic is extremely light, allowing riders to enjoy long stretches of empty asphalt through beautiful natural scenery.

As the highway twists between mountains, rivers, and lakes, every section feels different. Therefore, this route provides an immersive riding experience from Chợ Rã all the way to Na Hang.

29. Hạ Long – Cẩm Phả Coastal Road

Route: Bãi Cháy Bridge → Cẩm Phả
Distance: 30km
Province: Quảng Ninh
Scenery: Ocean views, limestone islands, beaches, bridges, city skyline

The Hạ Long–Cẩm Phả Coastal Road is one of Vietnam’s newest and most impressive coastal highways. The journey begins by crossing the iconic Bãi Cháy Bridge, which offers panoramic views of Hạ Long City and the surrounding bay.

Afterward, the road follows the coastline for around 30km. Much of the highway is built over the sea, connecting dramatic limestone islands that make Hạ Long Bay famous around the world.

Besides the beautiful coastal scenery, riders also pass several striking modern landmarks, including museums, aquariums, parks, and convention centres. Combined with its excellent road surface and light traffic, this makes the route one of the easiest and most enjoyable coastal rides in northern Vietnam.

30. Provincial Road TL48 / DT973

Route: Hàm Ninh → Cửa Cạn
Distance: 50km
Province: Kiên Giang
Scenery: Beaches, bays, jungles, fishing villages, seafood restaurants
Road conditions: Good two-lane asphalt road, very light traffic
Best time to ride: October–August

Provincial Roads TL48 and DT973 form one of the best motorbike routes on Phú Quốc Island. Recently paved, the road follows the island’s peaceful east coast before turning west toward Cửa Cạn.

Road conditions are good throughout most of the route. Moreover, traffic is light, allowing riders to enjoy quiet beaches, small fishing villages, and beautiful ocean views at a relaxed pace.

Further north, the road enters dense tropical forest on the edge of Phú Quốc National Park. The cooler temperatures and fresh air create a pleasant contrast to the coastline.
