Overview of Tu San Gorge in Ha Giang

Tu Sản Gorge lies along the emerald waters of the Nho Quế River in northern Vietnam. The river flows strongly all year across the rocky landscape of the Đồng Văn Karst Plateau.

1. The Legend of Tu San Gorge

Long ago, mountains blocked the river. Water gathered on one side, while the other side stayed dry and barren. The River God asked the Mountain God to move aside. He wanted the water to flow and nourish the land.

The Mountain God refused. He ignored the request and remained still.

The River God reported the problem to the Jade Emperor. During a violent storm, the Thunder God struck the mountain with lightning. The mountain split in two. Water rushed through the gap and formed a strong river.

Plants quickly grew along the riverbanks. The dry land turned green overnight. The flowing water later became the Nho Que River. It carved through steep cliffs and separated Mã Pí Lèng Pass from the Sam Pun mountain range.

This legend adds mystery and spiritual meaning to Tu San Gorge.

2. Unique Geological Formation Over 364 Million More than 364 million years ago, the Dong Van Karst Plateau lay under the sea. Over time, tectonic movements pushed the seabed upward. The plateau rose more than 2,000 meters above sea level.

Scientists have identified 138 geological heritage sites in this region. They have also recorded 17 fossil groups in sedimentary rock layers. These fossils include trilobites, ancient fish, sea lilies, coral, and bivalves.

Among 33 major tectonic heritage sites, Tu San Gorge stands out. The Nho Que River slowly cut through limestone mountains over millions of years. This natural erosion formed steep cliffs that rise nearly 1,500 meters high.

3. Boat Trip on the Nho Que River
