Tu Sản Canyon Boat Trip: Explore the Nho Quế River Below Mã Pí Lèng Pass
Introduction to Tu Sản Canyon
The Mã Pí Lèng Pass is one of the most famous roads in Hà Giang Province. This spectacular mountain route connects Đồng Văn and Mèo Vạc. Stretching for 23km, the pass winds around towering limestone mountains high above the emerald waters of the Nho Quế River.
Many travellers consider Mã Pí Lèng Pass the highlight of the Hà Giang Loop. However, there is much more to discover beyond the roadside viewpoints. One of the best experiences is taking a boat trip through Tu Sản Canyon.
Cruising along the Nho Quế River offers a completely different perspective of the landscape. From the water, visitors can admire steep cliffs, deep valleys, and dramatic rock formations far from the busy roads above.

Tu Sản Canyon Boat Trip Overview
A boat trip through Tu Sản Canyon is one of the most popular activities in Hà Giang. The journey lasts approximately 60–90 minutes and takes visitors through one of the most scenic sections of the Nho Quế River.
As of November 2023, organized boat tours are the only official way to explore the canyon from the water. Kayaks, paddleboards, and private boats are currently not permitted.
Although the experience is more regulated than before, Tu Sản Canyon remains one of the most beautiful natural attractions in northern Vietnam. The highlight is Hẻm Tu Sản, a narrow section of the canyon surrounded by towering limestone walls.
Most visitors start the trip from Mèo Vạc. However, travellers riding between Đồng Văn and Mèo Vạc can easily add the canyon to their itinerary.
Best Time to Visit Tu Sản Canyon
The Tu Sản Canyon boat trip is suitable throughout the year.
During spring and autumn, the weather is usually mild and comfortable. In winter, fog often drifts through the canyon, creating a mysterious atmosphere. Summer brings greener landscapes and stronger river flows.
Avoid visiting during heavy rain or storms. Water conditions can become unsafe and visibility may be limited.
Public holidays are often very busy. During these periods, visitors may need to wait longer for boat departures because advance booking is generally unavailable.
Before leaving, bring:
- Drinking water
- Sunscreen
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Cash for tickets
- Snacks or drinks for the journey
The ticket office usually operates from 7:00 AM to 6:30 PM. To avoid returning after dark, try to arrive before 4:00 PM.
Road 193A leads from the Mã Pí Lèng Pass down to the Nho Quế River

Getting to Tu Sản Canyon from Mèo Vạc
Start your journey in Mèo Vạc and follow National Highway QL4C towards Đồng Văn.
The road is relatively easy to ride and passes several cafés, restaurants, and guesthouses. This is a convenient place to buy food and drinks before heading to the river.
After passing Làng H’Mông Pả Vi, turn right onto Road 193A. The road descends toward the Nho Quế River and offers beautiful mountain views.
Although the scenery is impressive, several sections contain potholes. Drive carefully and watch for trucks travelling to and from the hydroelectric plant.
The drive from Mèo Vạc to the visitor centre normally takes around 30 minutes.

Visitor Centre and Boat Departure Point
At the end of Road 193A, visitors reach the Tu Sản Canyon Visitor Centre and ticket office.
A parking area is available for motorbikes, cars, and bicycles. Security staff are usually present, but valuable items should remain with you whenever possible.
Boat tickets currently cost:
- Adults: 120,000 VND
- Children under 1.2m: 60,000 VND
After purchasing a ticket, visitors board an electric buggy. The buggy transports passengers to the river marina within a few minutes.
From the buggy stop, a short 200-metre walk leads to the dock.

Boat Ride Through the Nho Quế River
The marina contains dozens of motorized boats waiting for passengers.
Most boats depart once they reach capacity. Because the attraction is popular, waiting times are usually short.
Each boat carries around 18 passengers. During the journey, visitors enjoy panoramic views of the Nho Quế River and the surrounding limestone mountains.
The river appears calm and emerald green for much of the route. Meanwhile, towering cliffs rise dramatically on both sides of the canyon.
This section of the journey provides some of the most photographed landscapes in Hà Giang Province.

Hẻm Tu Sản: The Highlight of the Canyon
After travelling roughly one kilometre, boats arrive at Hẻm Tu Sản.
This narrow section is the most famous area of the canyon. Massive limestone walls rise almost vertically from the riverbanks, creating a spectacular natural corridor.
The boat usually pauses here for photos. As a result, visitors have time to capture the scenery before continuing through the canyon.
For many travellers, Hẻm Tu Sản is the most memorable part of the entire boat trip.
Riverside Café Stop
On the return journey, boats stop at a small riverside café.
Visitors can relax while enjoying views of the canyon from elevated platforms overlooking the river.
Available refreshments typically include:
- Coffee
- Sugarcane juice
- Soft drinks
- Beer
- Instant noodles
- Light snacks
Many travellers consider this break one of the most relaxing parts of the experience.
You can stay as long as you like. Afterwards, simply board the next departing boat back to the marina.
Returning to Mèo Vạc
After arriving back at the marina, an electric buggy returns visitors to the ticket office.
Collect your vehicle from the parking area and follow Road 193A back to Mèo Vạc.
Alternatively, continue your journey along the Hà Giang Loop toward Đồng Văn and Mã Pí Lèng Pass.
Final Thoughts
A Tu Sản Canyon boat trip is one of the best experiences in Hà Giang Province. The journey combines dramatic scenery, peaceful river views, and unique perspectives of the famous Mã Pí Lèng Pass.
Whether you are exploring the Hà Giang Loop by motorbike, car, or bicycle, visiting Tu Sản Canyon offers an unforgettable look at one of Vietnam’s most spectacular natural landscapes.
