“Happiness is kneeling before a lotus pedestal.
Happiness is having someone to love.”
(From a Dharma talk by Venerable Thich Chan Quang)
These words stay in my mind long after the talk ends. Happiness can be simple. It can be sharing, feeling content, or being heard.
If you want to truly feel that meaning, visit Địa Tạng Phi Lai Tự in Ha Nam. Hidden in a quiet pine forest, this temple offers a rare sense of peace away from daily life.

Dia Tang Phi Lai Pagoda (Dung Pagoda) possesses a profound and ancient charm.

Opening hours: Địa Tạng Phi Lai Temple is open from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM every day of the week.
2. Meaning of the Name “Phi Lai”
The name “Phi Lai” means “to return” or “not return.” It carries both mystery and spiritual depth.
According to legend, a king once visited the temple to pray. When leaving, he said “Phi Lai,” giving the temple its name.
In Buddhism, the name also relates to Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, a symbol of compassion and protection. It reflects the idea that spiritual presence exists everywhere.

3. History and Restoration
The temple dates back to the 10th century. It was once a major spiritual center with around 120 rooms.
Over time, the structure fell into decline. For many years, it was nearly forgotten.
In 2015, the temple was restored by Venerable Thích Minh Quang. The renovation kept the traditional style while improving the overall space. Today, it stands as a beautiful blend of history and nature.
Now, the temple attracts many visitors each year. It is both a spiritual site and a peaceful retreat.

4. Unique Architecture of Địa Tạng Phi Lai Tự
– Harmony with Nature
The temple design follows the “back to mountain, face to water” concept. This is common in Vietnamese spiritual architecture.
One highlight is the pebble pathway. White stones form circular patterns that represent Buddhist philosophy. Walking here feels calm and meditative.
